MY POLICY WITH INSURANCE

The decision to not participate on insurance panels is something I feel strongly about, for various reasons some of which are outlined below. Yet, I understand that private-pay psychotherapy is a commitment, and investment(yet who and what is more important?), and maybe out of reach for some.  As a result, I have structured my practice to provide high quality service for my clients, I am an out-of-network provider for those who have that option, and offer sliding scale slots in my schedule as well.

Below are some important points to be aware of, and to consider, before you use in-network or out-of-network benefits :

Client’s health information (diagnosis, treatment plan, history, and progress reports), which must be submitted to insurance for payment, is not fully confidential as you might think. Using insurance requires the client to carry a mental health disorder/diagnosis, which can have a lasting impact on a client’s health records, insurance premiums, and work promotions in some cases. I believe you should be aware of any potential impact.

Clients may be unaware that there are many situations where confidentiality must be waived. I am aware of when clients have had to waive his/ her rights to confidentiality for promotions at work, application into law enforcement, personal lawsuits for emotional distress, custody/ divorce proceedings, and life insurance. This means that these organizations/ superiors will have access to your mental health diagnosis.

Insurance companies have placed great restraints on the quality of work, a therapist can provide. Due to the extremely low reimbursement rate for services, a private practice can not fiscally function on what insurance companies reimburse.  That is, the client numbers must increase to cover costs and the client care will inevitably suffer.

Insurance companies are trying harder than ever to limit the frequency and amount of sessions allowed. For healing and lasting change, long-term work is often needed. Insurance companies come from a medical model and focus on acute symptoms and care. Psychotherapy is a process-oriented treatment that differs greatly from the band-aid approach that companies want to reimburse for.
At the end of each month I will write a bill with all the codes required to be submitted to your insurance company for your reimbursement.  You will be reimbursed only after your deductible is met.  Please contact your insurance company to determine what reimbursement they will provide and what if any your deductible is.
